French films

I have been trying to learn French for a minute now. This list will contain French films I am watching.

1. Portrait of a Lady on Fire

This is the first French film I have watched in full. I liked that the dialogue was slow and easy to understand. I had English subtitles on. It’s a lovely film about a painter commissioned to paint a portrait that will facilitate an arranged marriage for a female aristocrat. The film covers themes of queer love, the female gaze, and the power dynamics between an observer and the observed.

2. La Haine - Watched 19/02/2024

Of a society falling off a skyscraper - “So far so good…….how you fall doesn't matter, it’s how you land.”

Themes of socio-political tension, police brutality, the plight of immigrants trying to assimilate, a failing system, and the energy that surrounds that. Follows 3 young men for 24 hours as they navigate a failing system, hang out, fume, and plot a vendetta and the confrontations they face in their day-to-day lives, among themselves and with others. Loved the soundtrack and was happy to find a curated one on Spotify.

Quote - “I feel like an ant lost in intergalactic space”
